The Game of Thrones season premiere reveals the fate of Ed Sheeran’s soldier
Singer Ed Sheeran’s cameo on the seventh season of Game of Thrones — as a Lannister soldier named Ed — quickly became one of the show’s most widely roasted moments. Though his appearance was meant as a present from showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss for actress Maisie Williams, who is a huge fan of Sheeran’s, his scene (which even included him singing a song) went down like Viserion impaled by an ice spear.
Sheeran himself commented on the fan reaction in an interview with BuzzFeed, saying, “It was fun being in Game of Thrones, but I definitely think they should’ve killed me off in the episode. I reckon that probably would’ve been the redemption for people that didn’t like it.”
Well …fans have finally gotten their wish — or something close to it — as the season 8 premiere of the show included a little tidbit as to what happened to Sheeran’s character.
In a scene in which the mercenary Bronn (Jerome Flynn) gets busy, the three women with him discuss the fates of various other men who were at the battle against Dany and Drogon, including a certainredheaded Lannister soldier.
“That boy Eddie,” one of the women says, “came back with his face burned right off. He’s got no eyelids now.”
Though claiming that Sheeran’s character has shuffled off the mortal coil may be a little bit of a stretch, we at least know that he’s suffered a classically awful Game of Thronesfate.
